I wouldn't be surprised if Edward becomes a Templar before an Assassin. Ubi have said he will be torn between both factions, so Julien du Casse being his mentor would make sense. Personally, I would like to see him change sides more than once in the game. Perhaps he could be a Templar for a couple of sequences? Of course, we all know who he sides with in the end.
