The word assassin' is etymologically derived from the historical Assassins, not the other way around. In other words, they were not called Assassins for being hitmen because they weren't. The term assassin came about because of their reputation for what we now call assassinations.
As well, the story that they were drugged with hashish has not been proven to be true and has been thought by some scholars to be rumors spread by their enemies.
