Notes

O Shadows of Alamut,

I was desperate, scrabbling under the foot of one so powerful that I'd despaired of help. And then, like a miracle, che weight was lifted, and I could breathe, for my enemy had been struck from the shadows. I pray that this token of my gratitude finds you. I have faith that it will. It was you that restored my faith, after all.

- A grateful stranger

Our friend in Baghdad reports that the chaos has abated somewhat. Yet new perils announce themselves daily. Al-Mutawakkil's son, passed over in the succession, threatens to press his claim. Our friend frets that he cannot fight a war on two fronts. On either field he expects our cooperation. I urge you to reconsider your alliance with the rebels, Rayhan. - T

Rayhan, When my men at the harbor learned of a certain cargo delivery to the Caliph, we shared the information with you freely. Yet we have heard nothing of it since. Keep secrets if you must, but I need assurance that there is nothing amiss that might interfere with the rebel cause. Allah has brought me as a light unto your path of shadows. Remember that. -Ali, Lion of the Zanj

Regions
Alamut

When an eagle landed on a nearby rock, Wahsudan ibn Marzuban took it as a sign that the mountain was the destined site for Alamut Fortress. Built in 865, the Fortress' name is possibly derived from Aluh amut and may mean "Eagle's Teaching" or "Nest of Punishment".

Anbar

Of ancient origin, Anbar was the residence of the Abbasid Caliphs prior to the founding of Baghdad in 762. While no longer the capital, Anbar retained its role as a place of administration and of lively commerce and trade.

Harbiyah

Baghdad's unwashed and unsung lived in the Harbiyah district where the run-off of industry ended-up; a busy area that was dull and grim with soot and the debris of hard work. It was also home to the notorious Damascus Gate Prison, a veritable tomb for those who fell afoul of the Caliph's favor.

Locations
Alamut Camp

At Alamut Fortress, the Hidden Ones chose to make their camp and train their novices. Alamut offered many advantages: its isolated location afforded anonymity and protection, while the foreboding and harsh landscape was perfect for the grueling training that was needed for new initiates.

Anbar Hideout

Nestled in the village of Anbar, Basim considers this hovel both his home and his sanctuary from the dangers of a thief's life. This unassuming hideout is where Basim and Nehal stash their ill-gotten gains and dream of a better life.

Citizens of the Caliphate
Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad ibn Ja'far

"Do you have any idea who I am?!"

Son of the Caliph Al Mutalwakkil [sic] and his favorite consort, Qabiha, Abu 'Abdallah was nursed by his mother on tales of ambition and success. Impetuous, lonely, and eager for his father's approval, he yearned to be at the center of the action - and soon came to regret his wish.

Al-Mutawakkil Ala Allah

"Do you have any idea what they will do to me?"

Al-Mutawakkil succeeded his brother to become the tenth Abbasid Caliph. He was then forced to fend off multiple threats to his position, both from the outside and within. Despite his high seat, there were forces at work in the Caliphate that he was eager to please - and more fearful still to offen.

The Banu Musa

"Science waits for no one."

The ingenious Banu Musa designed tools to give the Hidden Ones an edge in their battle against injustice. Identical in looks but unique in personality, Ahmad was aloof, Jafar was grounded , and Al-Hasan was fascinated by spirituality. Like most sibling, the brothers were prone to argument - yet when united in purpose, they created marvels.

Basim

"I can be an instrument that sees us out of this life."

Basim survived his childhood on scraps and cunning. By day, his friend Nehal picked pockets at his side - by night, a terrifying jinni tormented the young street-thief in his sleep. Ambitious and eager to serve justice, Basim yearned to join the Hidden Ones - yet even as his dream drew within reach, his nightmare too was closing in.

Dervis

"Anyone who works from the shadows does so only because they must."

Well-respected among the poor of Anbar, the peddler Dervis' shop was a humble front for an elaborate thieves' network. Gruff and protective, Dervis took an interest in the street urchins he employed. His dealingss included procuring items and information for the Hidden Ones; her entrusted such delicate tasks to Basim, his most skilled thief.

Fuladh

"We are messengers of justice, not the final judges."

Fuladh was Rafiq and Eagle-Master to the Hidden Ones, and they were family to him. Born enslaved, Fuladh escaped and found both refuge and his life's purpose among the shadows of Alamut. Calm, respectful and direct, Fuladh's wisdom and self-possession occasionally intimidated the novices but hid a good sense of humor.

Jasib

"This is my latest creation!"

A young orphan, Jasib survived the streets of Baghdad by picking the pockets of its citizenry. Hopeful and eager, he took great pride in his budding talent as a craftsman and was confident that his ingenuity would get him out of scrapes. Jasib admired Basim greatly, and was always eager to show him his latest creation.

The Jinni

"It never has much to say, yet it leaves its mark."

The terrifying jinni had stalked Basim's dreams as long as he could remember. Haunted since childhood, Basim dreaded its nightly approach. Paralyzed and helpless, he would wake in terror just before the jinni could consume him. Basim feared that the creature might one day break free of his nightmares; he yearned to exorcise his jinni.

Nehal

"You owe nothing to anyone but yourself."

Independent, resourceful and fascinated by all things ancient, Nehal had been at Basim's side for as long as either of them could remember. Fiercely protective, she was Basim's ally in his struggles with the jinni and yearned to see him freed of his burden. Yet their close relationship was strained by Basim's desire to join the Hidden Ones.

Nur

"We have a similar spirit, you know?"

A young member of the Hidden Ones, Nur was Basim's close friend and peer. A gifted climber, Nur's skill at scaling heights could rival any of his mentors'. Laid-back and affable, Nur's warmth brought a welcome energy to the fortress of Alamut.

Rayhan

"The Order has put a fog over Baghdad."

Having risen to the rank of Mentor, Rayhan positioned himself among the most important strategists within the entire network of Hidden Ones. Overseeing the Alamut Brotherhood, Rayhan ensured that their brand of justice was judiciously enacted and that their deepest secrets were fiercely protected.

Rebekah

"Why would I make anything less than unique?"

The daughter of a wealthy family, Rebekah felt smothered by the trapping of her station. Rebellious , she ventured beyond her gates only to witness widespread explotation. Unwilling to be party to an unjust system, she joined the Hidden Ones. Rebekah became the blacksmith of Alamut and enjoyed a teasing relationship with Basim.

Roshan

"Never compromise the Brotherhood."

Roshan found purpose and community among the Hidden Ones. She rose through the ranks to become a skilled assassin and a pillar of the group. Guarded and authoritative, Roshan's reserved exterior belied a fierce devotion to the cause. The Hidden Ones were her family, and she would brook no betrayal of them nor their Creed.

Factions
Caliphate Guard

A Caliph was the civil and religious head of the Abbasid Empire in Baghdad. Like any ruler, he commanded a force who could exercise his authority and protect him from outside threats. The Caliphate Guard were the sword-arm of the Caliph and were sworn to protect his interests to the death.

The Hidden Ones

Initially founded in Ancient Egypt, the Hidden Ones formed with a simple cause: to fight injustice from the shadows and defend free will. An ethos which still burns hot 800 years in the heart of Alamut, where the Hidden Ones nest and keep a keen eye on developments out of Baghdad.

Merchants

As the economic center of the Abbasid Caliphate, Baghdad was an attractive place for those wishing to trade or make money in its many markets and souqs. Merchants from all walks lined the city's streets to make a living any way they could, including lending a hand in all sorts of side hustles - for a nominal fee, of course.

The Order of the Ancients

A secretive group who revere the rulers of an ancient society known as the 'Isu', the Order of the Ancients believe that human kind is at its best when it falls in line. Their aim is to revive and consume as much of the Isu culture as they can, and govern the world with the same ideologies.

Enemies
Swordsman

The Swordsman was a common soldier combing and patrolling the streets of Baghdad, but they were not to be underestimated. Adequately proficient with any bladed weapon, the Swordsman struck fast and struck hard. If one was not careful, they could find themselves quickly outnumbered and quickly chopped down.

Agriculture

The Umayyad and Abbasid periods corresponded with important advances in agriculture across the caliphal territories. They were facilitated by the size of the empire and a taxation system which favored irrigated lands. Even though this period has sometimes been called an agricultural "revolution", it mostly took the form of an expansion, intensification and spread of existing techniques.

Pre-existing infrastructures such as Roman or Persian aqueducts, canals and reservoirs were expanded and brought to previously arid lands. The use of agricultural devices such as watermills, animal- powered water lifts (saqiya) and water screws, known across the Mediterranean but sparsely used until then, became widespread. Crops common in the Eastern parts of the empire, such as sugar cane or bananas, were adapted to new environments from Egypt to Iberia and North Africa. The results were higher yields, larger cities ... and plenty of citrus fruits!

These developments went together with a consolidation of land ownership into the hands of the elite. Large-scale irrigation works were lucrative but costly and could only be paid for by already wealthy landowners. The Abbasid period is therefore characterized by the expansion of huge estates to the detriment of smaller farmers, leading to widespread discontent.

Caravanserai

The Caravanserai was a "palace (saray in Persian) for groups of people (karvan)". More roadside inn than palace, it offered a safe place and varying levels of comfort to merchants, pilgrims and travelers recovering after a day's journey along the empire's roads.

Caravanserais were commonly constructed by the caliphs, their relatives and members of the local elite to display their piety and generosity. Hundreds of them dotted the empire, especially its Iranian-Iraqi core. They were built about 30 kilometers apart, the distance a man and his pack animal could be expected to travel each day. In them, travelers could find safety for the night, exchange goods, share news and pay taxes to ensure the maintenance of the facility.

No two caravanserais were alike. Even if most of them featured a large courtyard surrounded by a wall, both their physical appearance and available facilities varied widely from one to the other. In plains and deserts, the courtyard would be open and the walls made of dried bricks, while in the mountains, a fully roofed area would keep out rain and snow. The most well-appointed had a cistern, stables, a prayer space, guards, and rooms for guests. But most were simple roofed galleries without any of these niceties! While no caravanserais survive from this period, the so-called "desert palaces" of the Umayyads, like Qasr al-Hayr al-Shargi, may have fulfilled a similar role.

Government
Founding of Baghdad

When the Abbasids overthrew the Umayyads in 750, they quickly decided to relocate their capital away from the Umayyad center of power in Damascus. In 762, Caliph al-Mansur (r. 754-775) founded a new city which served as his family's residence for the next half-millennium.

After a personal reconnaissance of central Iraq, he chose a fertile plain bounded by the Tigris river next to a village called Baghdad (God-given in Persian). In selecting this location, al-Mansur participated in a long tradition of imperial cities in the region: both the Greek Seleucids and the Persian Sasanians had founded their capitals of Seleucia and Ctesiphon, respectively, in the area. Legend has it, a few kilometers to the north of these ruins, the caliph used his sword to draw three concentric circles in the sand, upon which the city walls were built. Inside the city, he installed his palace, large gardens, government offices and military barracks. In keeping with the Roman tradition of city layout, the concentric circles were divided into four quadrants by a Cardo Maximus (North-South Road) and a Decumanus Maximus (East-West road), which, upon leaving the city, led to various parts of the empire.

From the start, the city had many names. Al-Mansur called it Madinat al-Mansur ("the city of Mansur"), his administrators the “Round City”, and most of its habitants Madinat al-Salam, ("the city of Peace”, in reference to the Quranic Paradise). In time, all these names disappeared and only Baghdad remained.

Soon, merchants and craftspeople flocked to this new center of power, resulting in the vast expansion of the city outside of the original walls. By the ninth century, multiple districts on both banks of the river hosted hundreds of thousands of Baghdadis. Al-Mansur's creation had become one of the largest and most famous cities in the world.

Gates of Baghdad

From its foundation, Baghdad was surrounded by walls which protected its inhabitants against invaders and sandstorms. A series of large gates allowed military, processional, and commercial transit through these impressive fortifications.

The city's most striking feature was its round layout. This circular design was inspired by newer cities founded in the seventh century and by ancient cities like Gur or Veh-Ardashir founded by Sasanian kings, centuries before Caliph al-Mansur created Baghdad. By the tenth century, Baghdad had outgrown the original "Round City" and it was abandoned. Because of the destruction of the city by the Mongols in 1258 and the subsequent urbanistic development on top of the ruins, no archaeological evidence of it remains.

The circular inner city could be accessed through four equidistant gates. Each led to a different region or city of the empire and took its name from its destination: Kufa to the Southwest, Basra to the Southeast, Khurasan (Eastern Iran and Uzbekistan) to the Northeast, and Sham (Syria) to the Northwest. Many more gates dotted the outside wall. Most took their name from a feature or an activity performed in the vicinity, like a pomegranate market or a mill. Some were known for famous events that they hosted: as in other cities of the empire, the Iron Gate was thus called because it served as the gibbet on which the heads of traitors were displayed as a warning to others, most famously Caliph al-Amin's head (r. 809-813) after his defeat in a civil war.

Prisons

At least seven prisons existed in Baghdad, holding anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred prisoners each. Being condemned to spend time in any of these overpopulated jails was considered one of the worst forms of punishment possible, and there are multiple recorded examples of inmates begging to receive corporal punishments instead.

Most prisoners were debtors. The pressures of a life in prison were designed to make them pay what they owed to the State or to other individuals. Inside, they met all kinds of felons, from petty thieves to people convicted of public drunkenness. Criminal offenders were rarely held in prison, as most serious crimes (murder, treason, repeated blasphemy) were punished by death.

Some prisoners lived in awful conditions, but this depended on class and rank. Underpaid guards stole what they could from them, including the already insufficient rations of food and water awarded by the caliphal administration. Violence between detainees and the mass use of restraints which, for instance, prevented standing for prayer were other terrible aspects of life in an Abbasid jail. Women had their own jails, in which conditions were just as bad.

Worse still existed. Political and religious opponents that the caliphs dared not execute were often sent to the Mutbaq, a prison made of deep wells. There, they would await death in total silence and darkness.

Viewpoints

Northern Shangjun

This is an official market, with peace between soldiers and citizenry, and free trade between nomads and Qin. On most days this place is a forest of market stalls, all bustling with competition between merchants, filling the air with the verve of life.

This place hads been named Tulu Pass to commemorate Meng Tian's victory over the nomadic tribes. The pass has been critical in the war against the nomads, and fortifications have been built to repel invaders.

The first emperor of Qin formerly entrusted general Meng Tian to lead an army to attack the nomads and build the Great Wall. Today, the watchtowers have been destroyed, leaving behind ruins so dilapidated that even the bandits have abandoned them.

Located on top of a peak, the Altar of Soil and Grain is gorgeous yet solemn, displaying the people's devotion to the land. The governor offers sacrifices each year here, praying for a bounteous harvest in the coming year.

An earlier group of Qin citizens exploring outside the wall once rested here, and climbed up to look back on their hometown after the building of the wall, hence the name Homeview Stone.

This is a Great Wall watchtower over the North Pass. Gazing north from here, across the forlorn frontier beyond the wall, one can see a lonely cave that appears to have been deserted for many years. No one dares enter.

Originally built to observe the defensive line against the Xiongnu; however, the defensive line fell out of use once the Great Wall was built. What was once a watchtower now only silently watches over the barren hills by the river.

A constant stream of lumber and stone from Shangjun's forests and quarries flowed to the front line during the Great Wall's construction. General Meng established patrol posts near the forests and mines, and deployed troops to protect the supply line. This is one such fortification.

Southern Shangjun

The watchtowers south of the defensive line have seen a decline in importance since the Great Wall was built, but the Mt. Hei Garrison was built there to capitalize on its geographical advantages.

The defensive line was moved northward with the building of the Great Wall, rendering many of the watchtowers to the south ineffective, gradually leading to their abandonment.

Di District Granary Viewpoint: The granary is located in the midst of Di District's farmland. It not only carries all of the region's harvests, but also the hopes and dreams of the land.

The Viewpoint in Zhidao Pass has quietlu watched the vicissitudes of Shangjun since ancient times.

Di District Viewpoint: Di District is the premier city of the Shangjun region, sitting on Didao Ridge and facing the Great Wall. As a key northern transportation hub, it has been an area of great strategic importance throughout history.

Southern Didao Ridge

The tower of Yunyang City, commanding a view of Yunyang's prosperity and vitality.

Mt. Cuo'e is fifth among the mountain peaks, and is home to many bandits and rich mineral deposits.

Mt. Ya is sixth among the mountain peaks, and is near the location of Xingtian.

Ancient Eagle-Shaped Ding

An extremely rare ancient ceramic pot, or "ding," with an avian design. Once [sic] can speculate that this relic is used for sacrificial ceremonies. Ornamental creations already possessed vividly painted artwork in the ancient period this was made. This eagle-shaped ceramic pot is proof of the high degree of artistic ability possessed by our ancestors. This sacrificial vessel is a symbol of ancient peoples' totem worship.

Gold Cloud-Pattern Bowl

A wine vessel made of pure gold with handles made of jade, it is one of only a handful of works of art that combine the two. The level of skill and the amount of thought put into its design far outweigh the monetary value of the gold itself. Though gold smelting has reached an advanced level, turning pure gold into everyday utensils is still rarely done. Jade and gold are seen as symbols of blessings and good fortune, which explains people's fondness for such valuable utensils.

Jade Eye Copper Mirror

The glass beads on the back of this mirror are not items that any common family can afford to use. Initially, such items could only be obtained via trade with the Xiongnu. It is said that such beads were transported from the land to the Far West. Later, a group of craftsmen developed a new method of firing the glass, which is the primary reason why the back of this mirror is so extravagant.

Zither Carved wutg Taotie Pattern

A standard plucked zither with 25 strings. Decorated lavishly with ornamental patterns, such xithers are known as "gilded zithers" in the Rites of Zhou. Once a ritual musical instrument that only royalty could play, many have now found their way into the hands of common folk. Made with catalpa wood for the body and cow tendons as strings, zithers like these were played in rituals worshipping the heavens, especially during the Zhou dynasty. Confucians wish to revive this ritual system.

Ancient Ritual Music House

The palm-sized ornament features a pair of dancers and four musicians performing inside a house. The artist's uncanny ability to fit so much detail inside such a miniscule space makes this a stunning work of art. Thus we can see that the biggest difference between the nobility and commoners lies in the amount and type of amusements available to them. To the nobility, pleasure often takes higher priority than making a living. This attitude is especially prevalent among young noblemen, not yet burdened with affairs of state, whose unending demands on musicians and entertainers can lead to some rather absurd and fantastical performances.

Black Rongdi Bird Plate

Black ceramic wares are considered a novelty in every state, because only the people of Zhongshan can procure such wares. Zhongshan, being a state established by the Baidi people, has tried numerous times to get closer to the cultural sphere of the vassal states in the Central Plains. Producing these black ceramic wares is the result of such attempts. However, their identity as Baidi people has ultimately never been accepted. Even the state of Zhao, which introduced "barbarian-style" attire and horseback archery, has never once recognized Zhongshan as a "legitimate" vassal state.

Ancient Ceramic Tiger Figurine

An idol revered by the "Tiger" faith, a relatively primitive religious group compared to other, more complex, religious groups of Didao Ridge. It is clear that this relic has been handed down across many generations. It is generally believed that the tiger symbolizes Zhongshan nobility because it was viewed as the king of all animals. With a strong body and courageous spirit, it is only natural that the tiger was chosen by the gods to be their representative on earth. As a creature capable of devouring humans, it is both feared and revered by people.

Cloud-Patterned Lacquer Vessel

A vessel used to store wine or soup. This lacquerware is portable, and is used similarly to a cauldron. However, it is cheaper and more convenient. The vessel's surface features cloud patterns, with the word "Sidou" written on it referring to its capacity. The vessel's size is actually what makes the Cloud-Pattern Lacquer Fang so significant. Its use and the ability to fill it signifies that a high quality of life has been attained in Qin, and its users are members of the affluent portion of the population.

King of Zhongshan's Dragon Hu

A wine vessel with a square-shaped design commonly seen during the Warring States period. It once belonged to the ancient royal family of Zhongshan. Eight dragons are engraved onto the vessel, and marvelous inscriptions cover the surface, indicating the priceless value of this relic. This vessel was ordered to be cast by the King of Zhongshan for his prime minister. Used to store wine for paying respects to former kings, this artifact was a highly valuable ceremonial vessel during ancient times.

Phoenix-Crested Ladle

A dining ladle used by Qin officials. The ladle is engraved with the character for "salty," which serves as a reminder for the chef. The ladle is brilliantly carved and painted to resemble a phoenix, a very common design motif during the Qin dynasty. The Qin emperor is a direct descendant of the Shang dynasty, and thus, the Qin dynasty inherited a similar reverence for the celestial bird Xuan'niao. Its cultural importance can be seen in the prevalence of phoenix elements in everyday products.

Zhou Foal-Catching Gift

A ceremonial vessel granted by the King of Zhou himself as a token of recognition to a noble. The King of Zhou would bless foals that were ready to enter the royal herds during the ancient foal-catching rite, to thank and answer to the horse spirits that they worshipped. This ceremony held so much significance that nobles could be awarded special recognitions based on their performance.

Ancient Phoenix Head Basin

The basin was used for washing hands during ceremonies. It was a high-end item from the small state of Zhongshan and is rarely used now due to the complexity of the ceremonies. Zhongshan was made up of mainly Baidi people, who were one of the foreign races most influenced by the culture of the Central Pains. After several generations of great effort, the state officially received titles from the King of Zhou, an action opposed by his Ji clan vassals.

A lighting device that makes use of some interesting mechanisms, widely used by Qin officials. Known for their emphasis on practicality and utility, the Qin kingdom have a deep appreciation for Mohist engineering. A certain Mohist engineer was once commissioned to design this lantern, which was then quickly distributed to every official who had to travel on long journeys.

Han Earthenware Censer

Painted censors [sic] were some of Han merchants' most traded items, and were very popoular with officials and commoners during the rule of King Zhaoxiang. Qin nobility (and those commoners who can afford it) incorporate incense into formalities within their homes, as incense is a symbol of a desirable life.

Chariot Shield

A shield equipped on bronze chariots for defense purposes. This painted leather and lacquer shield is commonly referred to as a "chariot shield" in the army. Every shield has paintings that represent Qin warriors' deep respect for the dangers of the battlefield.

General Shou's Bronze Dagger-Axe

A first-rate bronze dagger-axe used by General Xiang Shou's troops during the reign of King Zhao of Qin. Once the governor of Shangjun, his special relationship with the Su brothers allowed Baiwen ideas to flourish inside Qin. The names engraved on this dagger-axe were probably of great significance to him.

Qin Tiger Tally

This is one of the oldest tiger tallies used by Qin during the Warring States period. It is more than just a symbol of power—it serves as a key that allows orders to be validated and armies to be mobilized. Those who are given a tiger tally are given permission to make war on behalf of the king. The king usually keeps one half of the tally in his own possession.

Ancient Taotie-Patterned Axe Head

A bronze cast axe head with a Taotie design. The Shang bronze battle-axe was the standard weapon of the Shang dynasty. The Taotie, an ancient mythological creature that represents greed and gluttony, was a common motif on weapons and vessels during the Shang dynasty. Now this type of axe, as well as its Taotie design, is rarely used, showing that the way of life of later generations has become vastly different from those of the Shang.

Bronze Yan Short Sword

A ceremonial short sword worn by the nobility of the state of Yan. It makes for an excellent assassination weapon at close ranges. Though it can be used like a dagger, it can also be modified to be a hidden blade. Its appearance in large quantities around the Shangjun signifies the presence of Yan activity, which does not bode well for law and order in the area. Jing Ke and Gao Jianli failed in their assassination attempts on the Qin emperor, but it is said there are still like-minded comrades of theirs in Yan. According to some Qin soldiers, a familiar figure has appeared in the Shangjun, and it appears that he is a former dog butcher from Yan.

Xiongnu Hedgehog Accessory

This charming pendant of a curled-up hedgehog is used to adorn the clothes of nomadic peoples. The Xiongnu excel at gold working, and their adornments are covered in tiny, exquisite details. The hedgehog is known for its resilience in adverse environments, making it a symbol for those who seek to thrive on the harsh steppes.

Golden Bear and Sheep Accessory

Designed in a bear and sheep pattern using thin sheets of gold and exquisite turquoise inlays. It's unlikely that it could have belonged to anyone but a noble. Its design is typical of the style found in Wu and Yue, so it likely came from the southern region. Further research would probably trace its origin to the period when King Tang of Shang overthrew the last Xia ruler with his military prowess.

Xiongnu Deer Ornament

The Xiongnu are surrounded by wildlife in their everyday lives. They are familiar with the appearance and habits of these animals. Xiongnu craftsmen sculpt these familiar creatures to remind soldiers of their homeland in the steppes even, even as they do battle in faraway lands.

Xiongnu Antlered Deer Ornament

Bronze deer ornaments are prevalent among Xiongnu homes. The long-antlered stag stands tall and proud, brimming with energy. As these deer are commonly hunted for food, the nomads have a profound gratitude for the animal.
