The boat cannon in action.

The boat cannon is a new ballistic gameplay sequence appearing in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. It is a device (probably built by Leonardo da Vinci) similar to a regular cannon, which projects fire balls in different directions in order to cause wide-ranged damage.

The cannon is placed on a small boat so that it can be driven throughout the Tiber River among other boats, and can be used to destroy Templar battleships. It appears to be mounted on a widened gondola with stabilizers. It is only used once throughout the single player story, but can be replayed at any time after the mission is complete. However, according to the game's achievements, the naval cannon will be destroyed.
