A lot of people already knew a lot about the Golden Age of Piracy, and they made a game on that.
I highly doubt most consider the Crusades common knowledge.
Just because you know of two people in an era doesn't mean you know the era itself.
The only era you posted that I think most people would consider common knowledge is the American Revolution. Just take a day to walk up to random people and ask them how much they know about the American Revolution or Golden Age of Piracy compared to the Crusades or the Renaissance.
If you ask me, Ubi just picks eras based on how good they can be gameplay-wise how new it will be visually, which is why I don't understand why they won't make an Assassin's Creed in Japan when there's so much potential there.
