Ezio, my friend! How may I be of service?

Archers are a type of guard who appear in both Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II and are commonly found on rooftops. They are always equipped with longbows and will shoot at the player when provoked, but will switch to their melee weapon (Swords) and will attack you when you get too close.

Archers in Assassin's Creed appear on rooftops in every city, and on top of large wooden structures in the kingdom. They commonly have very low armor and can be killed with 1 throwing knife, and can easily be approached and stealth assassinated from behind without being alerted to your presense. Overall the archers in Assassin's Creed are nothing you can't hande and should not worry you at all.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

Templar Archers are not as aware as the other archers in the other games and will usually only detect you and attack you when you are being chased. They are significantly dormant and oblivious to Altaïr, except when he tries to climb a structure. Altaïr can now assassinate from ledges, making them the prime targets of this technique.

There are 2 types of archers in Assassins Creed 2: regular longbow archers and fire tipped longbow archers, the latter attempt to shoot down the Flying Machine in the "Infrequent Flyer" mission (and the "Battle for Forli" DLC), and attempt to make the carriage crash in the "Romagna Holiday" mission (they shoot the arrows which create circles of fire on the ground and force Ezio to maneuver around them).

Archers are always found on rooftops in all cities. They use longbows and medium weapons. They will shoot at you if you don't leave the rooftops. They have an arrow warning above their heads warning you that they are aware of your presense. Depending on how close or far away from an archer who spots you, you can have 1-5 second to get away before they start shooting. Their arrows are dangerous as they do a conciderable damage and break Ezio's armor easily (except for the Armor Of Altair) if you get hit with them enough. They will also chase Pickpockets or Borgia Messengers on rooftops if they are spotted, but don't often catch them. If Ezio is surrounded by a great ammount of archers and if they are aware of your presense, combat can be a little more difficult but there are strategies.

1. If there are archers only in front of you, grab another archer that has come close enough to you to start melee combat. Before they shoot you, grab another archer and their arrows will hit the enemy you grabbed, then before they shoot more arrows, try to either throw the archer at the other archers to stumble them and run away, or you can use that to hidden blade assassinate them while they are down.

2. If you are fully surrounded by archers, use a smoke bomb then take out as many as you can while they are suffocating on the smoke, (hidden blade wil do fine) then the battle should be easier. You can either run away, or strafe to dodge some of the arrows, also giving you a good chance to stab some archers in the back while they are preparing to shoot at you with more arrows.
