Of course it's the French Revolution, you see Arno triggering the "rift" at the beginning. Whatever the rifts are for, they are most likely tied into the present day storyline. I'd be very surprised if Unity somehow tied into the epically obscure Memories. Also, the area where Arno is collecting data looks like it's near the Bastille.

Bov, where'd you see the reference to Melanie? And I agree, the woman sounds like she's an Assassin, or at least an ally. An Initiate maybe? I feel like her voice is familiar, but I can't place it.
