Auguste-Claude Tavernier (born 1725) was a French anti-royalist and a prisoner of the Bastille from 1757 to 1789.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1757, Tavernier plotted with Robert-François Damiens to assassinate King Louis XV of France. Damiens failed to kill Louis and was promtly executed by dismemberment,[1] while Tavernier was imprisoned in the Bastille and declared insane.[2] On 14 July 1789, rioting Parisians forcibly stormed the Bastille. While Tavernier insisted that he see Damiens, unaware his accomplice had been dead for over 30 years, the guards locked him inside his cell.[3] The rioters eventually freed Tavernier, but he was recaptured[2] and transferred to the Charenton insane asylum.[4]
