William Dampier (1651 – 1715) was an English navigator, explorer, and pirate, as well as the first person to circumnavigate the world three times.[1]

In 1707, Dampier suggested to Woodes Rogers that he set out on a privateering expedition in the Americas.[2] Around that same time, fellow pirate Alonzo Batilla found a map used by Dampier and counted it among his treasures.[1]
