The Whydah was a British galley originally built as a slave ship, and functioned as a pirate vessel for several months in 1717.
History
Named after a trading post on the West African Gold Coast, the Whydah was built in England in 1716 as a massive galley with three masts, weighing three hundred tons. It was used by Laurens Prins to transpory slaves across the Atlantic Ocean.[1]
In February 1717, Prins used the Whydah to transport a Piece of Eden, when it was attacked by pirates led by Samuel Bellamy, Olivier Levasseur and Alonzo Batilla. Batilla managed to cripple the vessel, and it was then taken by Bellamy as his flagship.[2]
However, Bellamy, secretly a member of the Assassin Order, was chased by the Templars, who believed Bellamy still had the Piece of Eden in his possession. On 26 April 1717, the Templars destroyed the Whydah and killed its pirate crew.
