Aslef (died c.872/873) was a Danish Viking who fought under jarl Osbern during the Viking invasion of England in the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Not much was known about Aslef, except he was sworn to jarl Osbern and fought in the Battle of Ashdown. The battle proved to be a Saxon victory as many warriors and their jarls fell in combat. Following Osbern's death in the battle,[1] Aslef joined Geirmund Hjörrsson as a member of the Hel-hides after growing a relationship with him as did other former warriors of Osbern.[2]

After a peace between the Danes and King Alfred,[3] Aslef soon followed the Hel-hides into Lunden after the company followed Guthrum and Halfdan Ragnarsson's army. Aslef began to contemplate his future as he soon asked Geirmund to release him from his oath to live a normal life. Geirmund understood and asked him to think on it before they all leave. Spending the day with his leader, he and Geirmund are soon attacked by Krok Uxiblóð, a kinsman under Halfdan. They escape the ambush but Aslef becomes severely injured. Back at their base, Aslef was left in Thorgrim's care as Geirmund, Birna Gormsdóttir, Steinólfur, Skjalgi, Rafn, and Vetr had to leave to save the rest of the Hel-hides.[4]

Death[edit | edit source]

A day after Geirmund and his five warriors left, Aslef passed away from his injuries with Thorgrim by his side.[5]
