Like his cousin, Muhammad ibn Tahir, he also served as the governor of Baghdad, holding the office three times: from 867 to 869, from 879 to 885, and from 889 to 891.[1]

The Tahirids were allied with the Hidden Ones and their protection was considered to be the only thing standing between Alamut and a full scale attack.[2] However, in order to avoid another civil war in the Abbasid Caliphate, Muhammad made a deal with the Order of the Ancients, giving them Alamut in exchange for the guarantee the pretender to the throne, Abu 'Abdallah, would not press his claim.[3] Abdallah ibn Tahir was then contacted by his cousin and asked to void all terms the Tahirids had with the Hidden Ones, which Abdallah complied with.[4]
