Thorgest (died 845) was a Viking chief active in Ireland during the 9th-century.

Biography

A fierce warrior from Scandinavia, Thorgest arrived in Ireland in 820. He also founded what would later become the Kingdom of Dublin, and is considered its earliest king. In 845 he was captured by Máel Sechnaill mac Máele Ruanaid of Clann Cholmáin who was High King of Ireland and was drowned in Lough Neagh.[1]

Legacy

Two of his drengir, Hogne Sea-Tossed and Blud the Giant, remained in Ireland until their deaths in glorious combat in 879.[2] His shield, sunk with him at his death, was recovered by the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir after she had defeated his two drengir.[3]
