Thomas Conway (1735 – c. 1800) was an Irish major general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography

In 1777, Thomas Conway was serving as a brigadier general[1] in the Continental Army under General George Washington. While Washington suffered military defeats at the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown, General Horatio Gates achieved a decisive victory at Saratoga. Subsequently, Conway wrote extensively to Gates about Washington's failings. When Washington learned of the letters, he took it as a sign that both of his subordinates were conspiring behind his back to replace him, and Gates and Conway were compelled to explain themselves before the Continental Congress. The episode, which became known as the "Conway Cabal", ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign. Conway remained very publicly critical of Washington until he was shot in the mouth by General John Cadwalader, one of Washington's supporters.[2]
