Theodore (died 867) was the childhood tutor to Emperor Leo VI the Wise in Constantinople in the 9th century.
Biography
In 867, Theodore worked as the tutor to a young Leo,[1] but had secret correspondences with the Order of the Ancients to kill Leo. After meeting with Ursina, a fortune teller and another Order ally, he aided in a plan to attack and even poison some guards in the children's wing of the imperial palace.[2] While working, he soon began a relationship with Leo's nurse Anna and offered a new life away with her from the palace.[3]
The attack plan changed after Anna offered to bribe the Order's leader Isaac with a jeweled comb for Leo's life, inadvertently putting herself in harm's way.[3] Days after the first attempt on Leo's life[4] at night, the Order besieged the children's wing, with Theodore poisoning the guards and intending for Anna and Leo to be slain.
