Temple of Pythagoras

The Temple of Pythagoras is an ancient temple located beneath Rome, built by the Pythagoreans; the followers of Pythagoras.

During his time at the Villa Auditore, Leonardo da Vinci researched about the Temple of Pythagoras. As his research advanced, he decided to draw a map to its entrance, and used invisible ink to sketch the pieces of the map onto his paintings on the villa's walls. However, when the city was attacked, the paintings fell into the hands of the Borgia family.

As Leonardo continued his research until 1506 in Rome, he eventually came into contact with the Cult of Hermes. He frequently visited the personal library of the Cult's leader, Ercole Massimo, in order to acquire even more information on the subject. Eventually, he was kidnapped by the Hermeticists, who desired the location of the temple, and the "Pythagorean Unifier" that was said to be hidden within it.

Ezio Auditore managed to gather the paintings and, with the help of Leonardo's assistant Salaì, discovered the temple's location. Upon rescuing Leonardo from the cultists, the two ventured deeper to explore the Temple of Pythagoras together, until they eventually stumbled upon the final chamber, a vault with a strange device in its center. When Ezio placed his hand on it, his DNA communed with the pedestal, revealing the coordinates: 43 39 19N 75 27 42W. Ultimately, however, he decided that it would be best to leave it and do nothing, saying that the message was not meant for them.

Trivia

• The above coordinates reveal a crater near Whetstone Gulf State Park in New York, which wasn’t there in 1998.
• Connecting the above coordinates with Rome, New York to the South and Florence, New York to the West while measuring the approximate distances with Bing maps results in an almost perfect Pythagorean triangle.
• The rooms leading to the Temple of Pythagoras each represent the five elements attributed to the points of a Pythagorean pentagram. The catacombs represent earth, the pool Ezio must cross to first reach Leonardo represents water, the room involving reflecting light represents aether, and the two following rooms quite obviously represent air, then fire.
• Ezio seems to have understand Minerva's warning at the end of Assassin's Creed: II, as in the Temple he understood that once again the vault wasn't talking to him, but rather through him.
