Steros (died 867) was a member of the Varangian Guard under Byzantine Emperor Basil I.

Biography

One night in 867, Steros and an accomplice were secretly commissioned by the Order of the Ancients and Emperor Basil to kill fellow Varangian guard Hytham, who was also a Byzantine Hidden One. After Hytham fell asleep, both Steros and another man tried to suffocate him in his sleep. However, Hytham woke up and fought his assailants off him. Engaging Hytham in a fight, Steros was quickly killed by Hytham. To hide Steros' death, Hytham and his mentor Basim Ibn Ishaq disposed of the body into the sea while Thyra cleaned up the blood.[1]
