The Sons of Xerxes were remnants of the Achaemenid Empire who remained in Greece after King Xerxes I defeat during the Greco-Persian Wars.

By the Peloponnesian War, the Sons of Xerxes settled in the area surrounding the village of Lalaia, harrassing the village's residents and hunters. Desperate for aid, the village sought the help of the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
