Arion

Arion was a Greek boy who lived during the 5th century BCE.

Son of Anais, an old friend of the misthios Kassandra, and Dantos, he lived with his parents on a farm in Arkadia near the Forest of Soron. After Dantos was conscripted in the army, and subsequently died, Arion and his mother were left to fend for themselves. He often trained to become a warrior, much to the discomfort of his mother.

Arion was fond of spending time with the wolves living at the Den of Lykaon. Due to the bond formed this way, the wolves protected Arion. When Kassandra was tasked with retrieving the boy, Anais explicitly asked her not to harm the wolves. Kassandra returned the boy safely.

Convinced by Kassandra to become a farmer, she taught him to harvest crops, burn old grass, and to kill a chicken.

After Kassandra and Anais went to the market in Tegea, the farm was attacked by bandits. Arion was wounded while defending the farm, and angry at his mother and Kassandra for not being trained a warrior.

Trivia

• Arion is an alternate spelling of Areion, the name of the mythical horse born from the union of Poseidon and Demeter, the Greek god of the seas and the goddess of agriculture, respectively.
