The Shaded souls were a type of soul found in the simulation of the Underworld. They were prisoners in Tartaros, and tried to escape the realm of Hades.

History

After Spartan misthios Kassandra killed Cerberus, Hades' guardian of the Underworld's gates, the souls of many prisoners escaped Tartaros – reserved for the Underworld's worst offenders – unchecked, resulting in a lot more work for Hades and Charon.[1]

These shaded souls appeared near Tartaros Rifts all over Tartaros. To close these rifts, Kassandra had to step into it, temporarily killing herself so she could end the souls and close the rift.

As Charon explained to Kassandra, another champion of Hades was once given a set of armor that could allow the wearer to bypass the Tartaros Veil without having to die, but those pieces were lost and had to be reclaimed.[2]
