The Sanctuary of Zeus Polieos

The Sanctuary of Zeus Polieos was a small open-air sanctuary dedicated to the god Zeus in the Akropolis Sanctuary in Athens, Greece.

Built east of the Erechtheion, the sanctuary was built around 500 BCE. Dedicated to Zeus Polieos ('city protector') for his role as a judge between the goddess Athena and the god Poseidon, the sanctuary housed in addition to the statue of the god the statues of animals sacred to him, eagle and ox. The sanctuary also served as the site of the main ritual of Zeus Polieos, the Bouphonia.[1]
