Samarkand is a city in Uzbekistan.

History

By the mid-8th century, one member of the Hidden Ones of the Great Desert was a Sogdian hailing from the city of Samarkand.[1]

Circa 1235, Qulan Gal, a member of the Mongolian Brotherhood of Assassins, instructed his friend Nergüi to travel to Samarkand, in what was then Transoxiana. He was to eliminate the captain of a tumen sent there by Ögedei Khan to reinforce his control over the city. Nergüi discreetly killed the captain and returned to Qulan to inform him of his success.[2]
