Saltpeter, or Salt of Petra,[1] is a naturally occurring mineral form of potassium nitrate.
History
During the Renaissance, the Italian Assassins mixed saltpeter with sulfur and charcoal to make gunpowder for smoke screen bombs.[2] Similarly, their Ottoman brethren utilized it as an essential ingredient in smoke decoy bombs.[1]
Behind the scenes
Saltpeter was originally a crafting ingredient in the 2010 Facebook-based game Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy. There it could be combined with brimstone and charcoal in a 1:1:1 ratio to make 12 units of gunpowder, which are then used with sugar to make smoke bombs. With the introduction of bomb-crafting in Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011), the substance has featured again but instead of being an ingredient for gunpowder, it is the core component for the smoke decoy bomb, separately from the gunpowder. Notwithstanding this, it is not used in making the smoke screen bomb, which is the type of bomb the series elsewhere normally refers to by "smoke bomb", so this appears to be a deviation from Project Legacy.
