Saint Dominic (August 8, 1170 – August 6, 1221), also known as St. Dominic of Caleruega, was a Castilian priest. In 1216, he was granted the authority by Pope Honorius III to found the Dominican Order, also known as the Order of Preachers, in order to address the spiritual needs of the growing cities.[1]

  • The timeline on Family Tree DNA incorrectly states that the Dominican Order was founded by St. Dominic in 1215.
