Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester (1 December 1595 – 2 November 1677), was an English diplomat and politician.

In the 1630s, Sidney purchased land from the government, building Leicester House and walling off what would later be known as Leicester Square. The public didn't take kindly to once-public land being walled off and used exclusively by the rich, so King Charles I responded to the outcry by making the field public once again.[1]
