The Recurve Bow

The Recurve Bow is a bow with limbs that curve away from the wielder. These bows have been common throughout the history at least ever since the 5th century BCE, when they were widely found and used in Greece.

Description

The design of a recurve bow has the limbs stretch away from the wielder when unstrung. Compared to straight-limbed bows, recurve bows can hold and deliver more power to an arrow when released. They provide the most advantage when used from horseback.[1] They were noted for their relative ease of use from even the most unskilled archer.[2]

Recurve bows in 5th century BCE Greece were mostly made of wood with ornamental decoration. The quality of such bows ranged from common to the epic, and could be found in most blacksmith's shops.[2] By the 1st century BCE, in Egypt, recurve bows had become scarce. Made with a mixture of animal and plant products, they were said to harness the power of nature.[3]

History

A variant of the bow was made available to the Spartan misthios Kassandra via an Animus modification by the Assassin Layla Hassan as she relived the mercenary's memories.[2] Similarly, a light bow variant of the bow was made available to the Medjay Bayek of Siwa.[3] By the 9th century CE, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan wielded a predator bow variant of the weapon once used by soldiers loyal to King Eirik of Hordaland.[4]
