A raccoon is a medium-sized mammal native to North America and the largest in the procyonid family. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions made by humans in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across Europe and Japan.

Characteristics

Usually nocturnal and endemic throughout North America, the raccoon is a skittish animal not particularly skilled at detecting threats. As a result, they are easy prey for human hunters employing bait and snares. They are also especially vulnerable to poison darts.[1]

History

During the American Revolution, raccoons, widely prevalent throughout the eastern coast of North America, were hunted for their pelts which could be sold in cities such as New York and Boston for a profit.[1]
