Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893), often anglicized as Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, was a Russian composer who rose to prominence during the late Romantic period of Russia.

His time was marked by the assassination of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1881 by the Russian Assassin Ignacy Hryniewiecki.
