Payen was a French doctor and a high ranking member of the Templar Order. During the French Revolution, Payen worked in Les Invalides as the overseer of the medical procedures in the Parisian hospital. Thanks to their new recruit, Dr. Claude Chemin, however, the Assassins discovered Payen's hidden allegiance and after having killed all his guards, assassinated him.
