Paulus Aurelius' body in the Cyrene Baths

Paulus Aurelius (died 47 BCE) was a Roman money leader who operated in the province of Cyrene during the 1st century BCE. He was an associate of Sminthos, who described him as a man who often spent his time drinking using the services of prostitutes.

In 47 BCE, sometime after Sminthos left the bathouse, Paulus was assassinated by Vesta, the daughter of a prostitute who came to Cyrene to seek revenge for her mother's death. Sminthos was framed for the murder and as a result was captured by Roman soldiers.[1]

Paulus' body was later investigated by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, who freed Sminthos and helped him to investigate the murder.[1]

Trivia

  • Paulus is a Latin surname meaning "small" or "humble". Aurelius is a name derived from the Latin adjective aureus, meaning "golden". It is also the name of a plebian family in Rome who spawned numerous Roman Emperors.
