Pope Paul III (1468 – 1549), born Alessandro Farnese, was Pope from 1534 to his death.
Biography
During his tenure, he ordered the architect Michelangelo to redo several of the buildings on the Capitoline Hill for the sole purpose of impressing Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire.[1]
In 1542, he began the Roman Inquisition by establishing a system of tribunals for prosecuting anyone with alternate religious beliefs to Christianity.[2]
