Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader who overthrew the monarchy during the English Civil War.
In 1651, Oliver Cromwell led his army into the Battle of Worcester, hoping to defeat the army of Charles II. Cromwell's army heavily outnumbered Charles II and his men. Cromwell's army managed to force their opponents into retreating, after which they lost track of Charles.[1]
During Charles' exile in Europe, Oliver Cromwell was named Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of EnglandCommonwealth and ruled over England for seven years, until he died. After his death, his son took control of parliament, but he abdicated within the month, which gave George Monck a chance to seize London and restore Charles to the throne of England.[1]
