Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing

A nurse is a health care provider focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.[1]

History

While medical attendants who cared for their patients had existed since ancient times, professional nursing only took form in the 19th century thanks to reforms brought about by Florence Nightingale.[1]

During the 9th century, the nurse Anna served as the childhood caregiver of the Byzantine prince Leo VI and helped the Hidden Ones Basim Ibn Ishaq and Hytham investigate the Order of the Ancients, who was targeting Leo, by spying on the prince's tutor Theodore, who was involved with the Order.[2] In England, the Anglo-Saxon woman Moira served as the chief herbalist and caretaker of the Viking jarl Halfdan Ragnarsson, whom she provided with her remedies to treat his ailments.[3]

Jennifer Querry

During the Salem witch trials in 1692, the nurse and British Assassin Jennifer Querry worked alongside her compatriot Thomas Stoddard to search for a Piece of Eden, which was believed to have caused the "possession" of several girls in Salem, Massachusetts.[4]

During the Victorian era, Florence Nightingale wrought numerous social reforms in regards to healthcare, especially in relation to how nurses were observed by the population.[5] While stationed at the Lambeth Asylum in 1868, Nightingale made the acquaintance of the Assassin Evie Frye.[6] Later that same year, she enlisted the aid of Evie and her twin brother Jacob when she learned that Charles Darwin had been arrested by a policeman. They managed to locate and rescue Darwin, and Nightingale tended to his injuries. Once Darwin had recuperated enough, he met with both Evie and Jacob, before Nightingale urged him to retire to the Isle of Wight for further recovery.[7]

At some point, a nurse by the name of Whitney worked at the Lambeth Asylum. She was responsible, amongst others, for a boy called Jack and apparently treated him cruelly and with negligence. This traumatized the boy, and years later in 1888, he returned to kill her.[8]
