Novice is the lowest rank in the Hashshashin sect. They have no use of the Short Blade, Throwing Knives, or Hidden Blade, only being able to use their longswords or fists. They are also unable to use the abilities Counter Attack, Counter Grab, Defense Break, Dodge, or Climb Walls. For the player, the amount of Synchronization available is lowest when Altaïr is first demoted to Novice rank.
Altaïr gets demoted to Novice after his failure at Solomon's Temple, after which he can climb back up to the top by performing assassinations.
