Northwest Passage was a simulated location used by Abstergo Industries, in order to train their recruits in the third stage of the Animi Training Program. The area was between North America and Canada's Artic Islands, as it prominently featured a wrecked ship (the Octavius) and an icy environment.
Northwest Passage features a daytime and nighttime setting.
It is also a location in the singleplayer game for Pegleg's sidequest The Ghost Ship, where Hendrick van der Heul's vessel Octavius can be found. Connor boards it in search of a scrap of William Kidd's treasure map, and after he finds it, the ice beneath the ship breaks and causes the vessel to sink, forcing Connor to flee. Despite his scepticism about the existence of the Northwest Passage -- as shown by his dialogue during The Ghost Ship, both to himself and to van der Heul's frozen corpse -- it does indeed exist.
