Naxos (Greek: Νάξος), also called Chora, is the largest city of Naxos Island, Greece. In classical antiquity it was a polis located in the region of Ariadne's Fate.

History

In the 430s BCE, As the Phoenix became the oligarch of the island, she made her base at a villa within Naxos.[1] By the time of the Peloponnesian War, dissenting voices towards her rule had arisen, however, and various walls within the city were defaced by a graffitist hoping to destabilize her status.[2]

In 429 BCE, the Spartan misthios Kassandra was led to the city by Aspasia, in search of Kassandra's mother Myrrine.[1]

Landmarks

Among its landmarks, Naxos boasted a temple dedicated to the Greek god Dionysos, in the hopes the god would bless the vineyards and farms of the island, and ensure the continued production of first-rate wine.[3]

Near the docks was located the Kouros Workshop, dedicated to the working of the marble mined from the quarry to the east of the city.

Behind the scenes

χώρα (khṓrā) is a Greek word which simply means 'town'. It is often used as the name of the main town on an island, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town.
