Mixcoatl, also referred to as Camaxtli was an Aztec deity revered as the god of hunting, war and in some Mesoamerican cultures identified with the Milky Way and the heavens. He was the patron deity of the Otomi, as well as many others. As Camaxtli, he was the central deity of the Tlaxcala.[1]

Influence[edit | edit source]

By 1519, with the looming threat of the Spanish Empire encroaching on Tlaxcaltec territory, many warriors invoked Camaxtli's name as a war cry. One in particular, the tecuhtli Chimalpopoca promised himself that the Spanish invaders would be captured or slain by Camaxtli. To encourage his warriors to engage the enemy he declared that Camaxtli was with them as they charged forward.[2]
