I believe there's no proof that Merlin took the sword, not even in Le Morte d'Arthur, nor is he mentioned in ACV

Merlin (Welsh: Myrddin) was the druidic mentor of Arthur Pendragon during the 5th century CE.

Legacy

After his death, some depictions of Arthurian legend held that Merlin was ruined by a fairy queen named Morrigan.[1] In 9th century Scotland, the Women of the Mist were given the final test before they could leave the island of Avalon with walking on mists to what was believed Merlin's cave.[2]

A millennium later during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian era England, there was an ale named after Merlin and Arthur, called "Merlin & Arthur Imperial Stout". In 2015, Shaun Hastings tasted this drink via the Animus and then wrote a tasting note on it for the Helix Initiate.[3]
