Melpomene is the muse of tragedy in Greek mythology and later Roman mythology. As such, she is also considered to be one of the nine daughters of the Greek god Zeus.[1]

Influence

In 431 BCE, at the Cult of Kosmos' meeting within the Sanctuary of Kosmos in Phokis, a masked Pausanias compared Lagos' sad face to "the tragic mask of Melpomene".[2]

Around 47 BCE in Cyrene, Vesta considered the death of the actor Metrobius to be "a great service" to Melpomene, leaving a note attesting this.[3]
