Marco's wife, Carlotta, was previously married to his personal bodyguard and close friend [[Dante Moro]]. Being the good Catholic that Marco is he has Dante murdered, which fails. Now with the mind of a child Marco has Dante annul the marriage and is kept as Marco's personal slave.

Marco and Dante are first seen at a meeting in Venice with Silvio and [[Carlo Grimaldi]]. Here they plot to kill the current Doge and it is decided Marco will take his place. He is next seen attending the Carnival in Venice on a barge. It is here that Ezio shoots him with the hidden gun amid the noise of the fireworks.
