Libertalia, also called Libertatia,[1] was a pirate colony and purported utopia established in Madagascar. In 1713 Woodes Rogers traveled to the stronghold in order to subdue the pirates only to find it on its last legs already.[2][3] In 1717 pirate Charles Vane called the pirate republic of Nassau the "new Libertalia".[4]
Behind the scenes
Historically Libertalia (alternatively Libertatia) is considered a myth with the main account being the dubious A General History of the Pyrates. While Woodes Rogers's trip to Madagascar is real there is no evidence he encountered Libertalia.
