The Liberation of Rome was an event taking place in the Italian Renaissance in which the city of Rome was liberated from the rule of the Borgia by the Assassins and was brought into the Renaissance.
In 1500, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze travelled to Rome to once more seek revenge on the Borgia. Rome, under the rule of the Borgia, had become decrepit, decaying under oppresion and corruption. The people were starving, scared and feared for their lives. Ezio needed to make the people believe again. His mission was not just about destroying the Borgias: it was, more importantly, bringing the ideas and beliefs of the Renaissance to Rome.
Recruiting the rebels
Upon arriving in Rome, Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, another Assassin, began renovating Tiber Island and made it the center of their operation. Ezio knew he was going to need help if he was to defeat the Borgia. He began saving rebellious citizens who were being bullied by Borgia guards. After being rescued, they knelt down to Ezio and swore their allegiance to the Assassin cause. Ezio then sent them to Niccolò Machiavelli, where they would become Assassins themselves.
The Borgia influence
Rome was under the iron fist of the Borgia. The people were scared, living miserably and were being constantly bullied by Papal guards as well as the occasional highwayman or bandit. The Borgia kept control over the five districts in Rome using towers, which were guarded by its leader and group of guards. The tower prevented shops from re-opening and keeping the districts dull and decrepid. There was a strong military presence in Rome, as the Borgia had the Papal armies at their command. Papal guards constantly bullied and harassed the people, scaring and terrifying them into submission. Rome under the Borgias was a police state, and the citizens of Rome had begun to lose all hope.
Liberation
Ezio started with the Borgia towers. In order to free the districts, the towers had to fall. First, Ezio would find the tower leader, kill him and make his way to the top of the tower and blow it up with barrels of gunpowder. With each tower destroyed, shops started to re-open, dull and grey buildings would become flourishing homes, crime reduced and less Papal guards occupied the districts. The city's streets and renovations improved, and the citizens also changed, as beggars and addicts became artists and merchants and Ezio would also get to recruit more apprentices with the towers destroyed. Borgia flags were scattered across Rome to show that the Borgia controlled that area. As Ezio collected the flags, the Borgia lost more of their control over the people. Rome began to change and rebuild and the people grew more confident that the Borgia had less and less control over their lives.
1500
In January of 1500, Ezio Auditore and Nicolo Machiavelli arrived in Rome and made Tiber Island the center of their operation. When Ezio first arrived in Rome in 1500 he carried no other weapon other than a single hidden blade. Destroying the Borgia towers allowed Ezio to upgrade his own equipment as shops could be re-opened and factions restablished. As the city began to improve, Ezio could make improvements to his weaponary, armor, medicine and other supplies. With Ezio more prepared for field missions he was ready to begin recruiting rebels and undermine the Borgia.
1502
In 1502 Leonardo Da Vinci was forced into service for the Borgia as a military engineer and architect, against his own will. When Leonardo and Ezio were reunited in Rome the same year Leonardo told Ezio of his forced services and that he was made to build war machines like the armoured car, chariot machine gun and another, more advanced Flying Machine. Ezio set out to destroy these machines at once starting with the armoured car in Monte Circeo where the tank was being developed, after interrogating the engineer and burning copies of the design and freeing captured soldiers, Ezio found the machine and escaped the area using it to destroy the military base where it was being developed in. After Ezio's success in Monte Circeo, he decided to keep it safe at Tiber Island.
Ezio also stole the advanced flying machine at another Borgia military base. It is unknown if the flying machine was destroyed by Ezio or safely kept at Tiber Island.
Ezio also highjacked the chariot machine gun when it was being drove through the countryside, after Ezio dispatched all the guards who gave chase with the machine gun itself. Towards the end of the memory sequence, Ezio detaches the gunpowder-laden Chariot from the bar attached to the horses and shooting it with the Hidden Gun, resulting in the explosion of Ezio's chasers whilst Ezio "surfs" the horse bar.
1503
By the year 1503 Ezio had almost fully liberated Rome from the Borgia rule. Ezio had already destroyed all the Borgia towers that conquered the citys districts and all the shops re-opened too. Ezio also recruited many more Apprentices to aid him. Ezio had also assassinated all of Cesare Borgia's genrels, this includes Duke de Valois, Juan Borgia and Micheletto, with Rome almost free of the Borgia influence Ezio was ready to face Cesare and Rodrigo. At some point in 1503 Cesare and Rodrigo Borgia paraded through Rome in Papal parades, as Ezio finaly face Cesare and Rodrigo together Ezio and his Apprentices fought against Cesare and his Papal guards.
On 18 August 1503, Rodrigo Borgia died of fever, with his death Rome was fully liberated of the Borgia rule.
Aftermath
Rome was fully liberated of the Borgia rule, after Rodrigo Borgia's death. Cesare Borgia was soon arrested by the new Pope, Pius III. In 1504 Cesare Borgia was exiled to Spain and was imprisoned in the Castle of La Mota, from which he escaped and joined King John III of Navarre, his brother-in-law. By 1507, four years after Romes liberation of the Borgia, the Siege of Viana in Spain took place, this is presumably the first time Ezio and Cesare saw each other since Romes liberation in 1503. Viana was also where Cesare Borgia dies.
