Pope Leo IV (790 – 855) was bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States from 10 April 847 to his death.

During his reign, Leo IV organized a league of Christian states and defeated the Muslims at the Battle of Ostia in 849. When the future King Alfred visited Rome with his father Aethelwulf, the Pope blessed and recounted his navy victory to the young boy, making a lasting impression on him.[1]
