Leif Ericson (c. 970 – c. 1020) was a Norse explorer widely regarded today as the first European to reach North America, in what is Newfoundland today.
Although it is unknown whether he was part of the initial voyage to North America, he was certainly a member of the Viking expedition that reached L'Anse aux Meadows. According to Viking myths and sagas, Ericson founded a colony there in the area known as Vinland.
