Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent or Midgard Serpent, is a giant serpent, depicted as either a snake or serpentine dragon in appearance, that encircles the earth in Norse mythology as well as the arch nemesis of the Isu Thor.

Mythology

The son of Loki and the Jötunn giant Angrboða, Jörmungandr is the middle brother of both Fenrir, the legendary wolf prophesied to kill Odin during the final battle of Ragnarök, and the goddess Hel who rules over Helheim[1]

Legacy

The stories of Jörmungandr became intertwined in Norse culture, as a result Vikings would be tattooed with the serpent for strength in battle.[2]
