Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte (7 January 1768 – 28 July 1844), born Giuseppe Buonaparte, was a French diplomat and nobleman, as well as the elder brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. He reigned as King of Spain from 1808 to 1813 as José I.

Joseph and Napoleon were able to enroll in France's Collége d'Autun after their father, Carlo Buonaparte, switched his allegiance to the French after the nationalist leader, Pasquale Paoli, was forced to flee Corsica.[1]

In 1808, Napoleon invaded Spain and Joseph was made King. He was welcomed by Spanish Francophiles, who believed collaboration with France would bring modernization, liberty and the abolition of the Spanish Inquisition.[2]
