For the multiplayer character, see Executioner
"It was not my best work, but it is hard to make good art with poor materials."
―Il Carnefice, on the execution of a young woman.[src]

Il Carnefice (1473 - January 1500) was an executioner active during the late 15th and early 16th century in the city of Rome and a member of the Templar Order.

In 1500, he forced himself onto a woman named Livia, only to later have her hanged. The woman's husband later mourned her death, but he was unable to remove her body down from the noose, at the threat of being executed himself by Carnefice. This caught the attention of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who decided to aid the man by bringing justice to Il Carnefice. Ezio infiltrated Il Carnefice's cliff side palazzo, where he was was discussing his latest kill with an associate of his, and swiftly assassinated him.[1] With Il Carnefice dead, the executions of many innocent citizens were put to a stop.

II Carnefice dies at the hands of Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

Il Carnefice also appears in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy in the mission "Gallows Humor," wherein Cesare Borgia sent Fiora Cavazza to bring him a sealed envelope. At first, Il Carnefice acted serious upon opening the envelope, telling Fiora that her name was in its contents, but it turned out that he was only playing a prank on her, admitting that he couldn't read. Fiora later witnessed his brutal executions, ending up more disgusted than terrified of his antics.

Database Entry

Il Carnefice

Date of Birth: 1473.

Profession: Executioner.

There's nothing in the history books about Il Carnefice, so I did a little digging in Abstergo's mainframe. Here's what I found: "A natural ally for the Borgia, Il Carnefice kills to the roar of an approving crowd."

The other small piece of information I could dig up is that he fancies himself as some sort of twisted artist. I guess that explains the crowd bit. I wonder if he does tricks while performing executions, or whether it's all in the subtle way he pulls the lever?

Trivia

  • Il Carnefice's axe in the Story mode is not the same one he uses in Multiplayer. Instead, it is the Bearded Axe, a common weapon that is wielded by Brutes, and can be bought from the Blacksmith.
  • Il Carnefice is the first multiplayer character encountered in Brotherhood.
  • His name in English translates as "The Executioner".
  • Il Carnefice fights like a Brute.
