Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and the Queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology.
Ultimately defeated by the legendary hero Theseus, Hippolyta died of grief. In her honour, a monument was raised in the Valley of King Lelex in Megaris.[1]
Hippolyta was said to have been gifted a girdle by Ares, signifying her authority as the queen of the Amazons. During the Peloponnesian War the Spartan misthios Kassandra recovered a belt bearing that honor.[1]
