Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi (1609 – 1640) was a legendary Ottoman aviator during the 17th century.
Biography
According to the writings of traveling historian Evliya Çelebi, Hezârfen strapped himself into a homemade glider in 1632, and threw himself off the cornice of the Galata Tower in Constantinople. The historian claimed that Hezârfen's flight took him across the Galata District and Bosphorus strait, landing safely on the shores of the Asian continent. This would have been one of the earliest attempts at sustained, unpowered flight.[1]
Impressed by Hezârfen's apparently supernatural abilities, Sultan Murad IV paid him a large bag of gold coins. He then banished him to Algeria, where he died some years later.[1]
