Helsinki was established as a trading town by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550. In 1809 [[Sweden]] lost Helsinki, and the rest of [[Finland]] to the [[Russia|Russian Empire]] during the the Finnish War. Following the conflict, the newly formed Grand Duchy of Finland became an autonomous state of the Russian Empire.
